Chemicals used in the construction industry

Chemicals are an integral part of construction activities. A number of chemicals are used in the construction process, in order to provide greater stability, durability, strength, and luster to the structure. Several chemicals such as adhesives, epoxy products, sealants, joinery products, are commonly used for the purpose of construction.

The different types of chemicals used in the construction industry, are:

Adhesives: Adhesives are one of the most common chemicals used in the construction activity. A wide range of adhesives catering different needs is available in the market. Adhesives are categorized to fast drying variety, contact adhesives, high performance variety, dry powder adhesives, and other variations.

  • Universal PVA – This is the most common type of adhesive used in the construction activity. It is general use woodwork adhesive, which is suitable for both softwood and hard wood varieties. It contains artificial resin mixture, which works brilliantly on indoor bonding activities. This adhesive is highly reliable as it seldom gives way, and failure in bonding is largely due to the fractures in the wood.
  • Waterproof PVA – This is another commonly used adhesive. It is a water resistant, multi-use adhesive, which is used for bonding furniture joints and lamination on wooden boards. The bonding of the Waterproof PVA is superb and it is a popular product because it is fast setting and highly durable.
  • Fast-Setting PVA – This adhesive is used for fastening various types of materials such as hardwoods, laminates, softwoods, hardboards, plywood boards, and other wood based materials. The advantage that Fast Setting PVA has over the other types of adhesives is its setting time, which is around 10 minutes.
  • Wood Weld PU – This is a single ingredient polyurethane adhesive, which is used for bonding different types of construction materials. It is completely water resistant, and the bond is virtually unbreakable. The curing time of this adhesive is very short, which gives an added advantage.
  • Contact Adhesive – These adhesives are regarded as the strongest type of adhesives. It has superb bonding ability and is ideal for heavy duty bonding activities. These adhesives are resistant to water, moisture, heat, ultra violet rays and are also fast drying.
  • Cement-type contact adhesive – These are multi-use, highly effective contact adhesives. It does not drip so it is perfect of vertical and ceiling based activities. It can be used for various purposes such as bonding polyurethane foams, leather, glass fiber, rigid plastics and rubber sheets.
  • Cyanoacrylate Adhesive – Cyanoacrylate is a highly viscous, super strength adhesive. It is perfect for bonding uneven or absorbent materials. The advantage of using Cyanoacrylate adhesive is that it has superb gap filling ability.

Sealants: Sealants are important construction based chemicals. The most commonly used sealant is the silicone variety, used for large number of purposes. These sealants can be used for both external and internal application. There are different types of sealants, such as:

  • Multi-Purpose Silicone Sealant – It is an acetoxy curing, high-modulus, silicone based sealant. It is based on a single component, flexible, strong type of polysiloxanes. It has superb ability to adhere to different materials like ceramic, glass, and porcelain. It is available in different colors, such as black, white, clear and brown.
  • Low Modulus Neutral Cure Silicone – This sealant has superb ability to adhere to permeable surfaces and other surfaces with low adhesion power. This sealant works based on the methoxy vulcanizing system. It is ideal for bonding with movement and sanitary applications.
  • Paintable Silicone – This new generation sealant is highly effective for bonding and making the surface water-resistant. It is flexible, strong, and has superb adhering ability. It also has fast curing time.
  • Fire-Rated Silicone – This is a single ingredient silicone based elastomer, which is used for fire resistant seals. It is used for panels, metals, PVC joins, cable bundles, air ducts, and for elastic seals on PVC, aluminum and wood. It is also used for heavy construction works.
  • Expanding Foam – It is a single ingredient, polyurethane foam, stored in a pressurized aerosol canister. The foam is produced by the mixture of diphenylmenthane di-Isocynate, hydrocarbons and spraying agent. The expanding foam is used for a variety of purposes, such as filling gaps, foam sealant and other purposes.

Epoxies: Different types of epoxy products are widely used in the construction industry. The usage of the epoxy products ranges from floor repairs to surface coatings.

  • Epoxicote Sealer – It is a tough and durable epoxy resin based sealer, which gives a superb coating on the surface. The coating is resistant to most of the acids and wear. The product can also be used for industrial usage.
  • Epoxy Dustproofer and Sealer – This provides a low cost and effective solution to the dust problem of the concrete structure. The sealing is highly durable in nature and can be cleaned instantly.
  • Epoxy Repair Mortar – This is a low cost, highly durable mortar, which takes very little time to set. The curing takes about one night and it can take heavy loads after that. It is excellent for repairing floor joints and holes in the floors.

Joinery Products: Joinery products are commonly used for furniture making and other wood based activities. There are numerous joinery products available in the market such as oxalic acid and a variety of wood preservatives.

  • Oxalic Acid – This acid is a stain removal agent, especially effective on light colored wood materials. It can be used for both internal wooden structures and external wooden beams.
  • Clear Wood Preservative – This is an alcohol based preservative for wood products. It is very easy to apply and highly durable.
  • Clear Plastic Coating – It is a translucent covering layer, which is extensively used for protecting luxurious furniture finishes. It is highly durable and resistant to chipping. It can be applied using a piece of cloth, brush or aerosol. It provides a fine, smooth and glossy look.
  • Danish Oil – This is a special oil formulation which provides a protective coating by penetrating deep into all types of softwoods and hardwoods. It also dries very quickly.
